5 Warning Signs Your Car Needs a Mechanic — Don’t Ignore These in Nairobi

Nairobi is one of the toughest cities in the world on a car. Between the traffic on Thika Road, the potholes on Ngong Road, the dust, the heat, and the stop-start commuting, your vehicle works harder here than almost anywhere else. The problem is that most drivers only call a mechanic when something has already gone badly wrong — and by then, what might have been a small fix has become a big one.

Here are five warning signs your car is trying to tell you something. Catch them early and you’ll save yourself money, stress, and a very inconvenient breakdown.

1. The Check Engine Light Is On

This one seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many drivers in Nairobi drive around for weeks with the check engine light glowing on the dashboard. It’s easy to convince yourself it’s nothing serious. Sometimes it isn’t — but sometimes it’s the early warning of an engine or emissions fault that will get much worse if left.

A proper OBD diagnostic scan takes minutes and tells you exactly what the fault code is. Don’t guess. Pantoni’s mobile mechanics carry professional diagnostic equipment and can scan your vehicle at your home or office.

💡  PANTONI TIPA check engine light combined with rough running, loss of power, or unusual smells should be treated as urgent. Call us before driving further.

2. Strange Noises — Especially When Braking or Turning

Your car should be relatively quiet. Any new noise — grinding when you brake, a knocking from the engine, a whining when you turn the steering wheel, or a rumbling from underneath — is your car flagging a problem.

Brake grinding in particular is serious. It usually means the brake pads have worn through completely and metal is contacting metal. In Nairobi’s traffic, your brakes are working constantly. Don’t delay on this one.

3. The Car Is Pulling to One Side

If your car drifts left or right when you’re driving straight, or the steering wheel sits off-centre, it’s usually a sign of a wheel alignment issue, uneven tyre wear, or a suspension problem. Nairobi’s roads are hard on alignment and tyres — this is a very common issue here.

Left unaddressed, poor alignment causes uneven tyre wear, which means you’ll be replacing tyres much sooner than you should be. It also puts strain on suspension components.

💡  PANTONI TIPIf your car pulls heavily to one side when braking, that can indicate a brake fault. Have it checked immediately.

4. Fluid Leaks Under the Car

If you notice a puddle or stain under your car after it’s been parked, pay attention to the colour. Oil is dark brown or black. Coolant is usually green, orange or pink and has a sweet smell. Brake fluid is pale yellow. Power steering fluid is red or light brown.

Any fluid leak means your vehicle is losing something it needs to run safely. Coolant leaks in particular can lead to overheating very quickly — especially dangerous in slow Nairobi traffic where the engine has no airflow to help it cool.

5. The Engine Is Overheating

If your temperature gauge climbs into the red or you see steam from under the bonnet, pull over immediately and switch off the engine. Driving an overheating engine — even for a short distance — can cause serious and expensive damage to the cylinder head and gaskets.

Call Pantoni’s roadside rescue service. We’ll come to you.

💡  PANTONI TIPNever open the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Wait at least 30 minutes after the engine cools before checking coolant levels.

The beauty of Pantoni’s mobile mechanic service is that you don’t have to tow your car anywhere. Whether you’re at home in Karen, at the office in Westlands, or stuck on Mombasa Road, we come to you with the tools, parts, and expertise to diagnose and fix the problem on the spot.
